Ajay Peni, also known as Ajay Ataera, was born and raised amidst the wild winds and enveloping mists of the Chatham Islands/Rekohu/ /Wharekauri. With a humble spirit and a profound appreciation for his native Moriori, Maori, and Rarotongan heritage, Ajay draws inspiration from his upbringing to create music that serves to weave and connect people from all walks of life and remind us of the transformative power of music.

For the past nine years, Ajay has been crafting his name on the music scenes of Perth, Western Australia, and always making the effort to take it home to his cherished Chatham Islands. Throughout his journey, his homeland, its people, and their stories have remained the driving force behind his artistry.

In the early stages of his career, Ajay had the privilege of opening for esteemed New Zealand artists, which deepened his passion for music and refined his skills as a performer, performing then under the handle ‘44º Degreez’ (the latitude of the Chatham Islands).

Also Infusing an unwavering dedication to reviving his Moriori heritage, Working closely with the Hokotehi Moriori Trust, Ajay passionately contributes to the revitalization of his ancestors' language by composing music and melody to accompany their prayers and songs, known as 'Rongo.' This meaningful project has now expanded, with Ajay serving as the musical director for Rongo in a project with Otago University, shedding light on the beauty of Moriori music, art, and culture.

Ajay's music, design, and artistic direction are a testament to the essence of being a Chatham Islander. It encompasses the very fabric of the islands— the ever-changing weather, the strength of community, the raw power of the elements, and the intricate tapestry of both dark and light history. His songs are imbued with resilience, self-sufficiency, integrity, innocence, and honesty, illuminating the captivating stories that make up his unique heritage.

With a genuine passion for his craft, his music breaks physical boundaries to touch the depths of our shared cultures. Through his art, he weaves a beautiful tapestry of connections, fostering a sense of unity and celebrating the beauty of diversity.
